Potassium, glucose and insulin helps reduce death from heart attack
A solution of glucose, potassium and insulin has been shown to be effective in reducing deaths from heart attack, according to a study carried out in six Latin American countries. This treatment was originally introduced in the early 1960s but was subsequently abandoned due to doubts about its effectiveness.
The study involved over 400 patients with suspected heart attack. The patients were divided into 3 groups, 135 patients were in the high dose group, 133 in the low dose group and 139 in the control group.
The results showed that patients treated with the glucose, insulin and potassium solution had a death rate of 6.7 per cent while the control group death rate was 11.5 per cent. High dose treatment was superior to low dose treatment.
