Folate supplements do not increase the risk of multiple births

The results of a study carried out by researchers at the University of Oxford in the UK suggest that folate supplements do not increase the risk of multiple births.

Adequate folate intake during pregnancy has been shown to reduce the risk of neural tube defects such as spina bifida and many women take supplements. There has been some concern that supplements might increase the risk of having twins, triplets or other multiple births.

However, when researchers analyzed the results of two well-regarded British studies (the MRC vitamin study and the Prospective Study of Nutrition, Smoking and Pregnancy Outcome) they found that the rates of multiple births were similar in both the supplemented and unsupplemented groups.
