Folate and vitamin B12 beneficial for the heart
A supplement that combines folate and vitamin B12 may be more beneficial for the heart than folate alone, according to a recent study by researchers at the University of Bonn in Germany.
Both folate and vitamin B12 have been shown to reduce homocysteine levels, protecting the heart and blood vessels from the damaging effects of this amino acid.
The study involved 150 women who were divided into groups. One group took 400 mcg of folate supplements alone, another group took folate and 6 mcg of vitamin B12, and another group took folate and 400 mcg of vitamin B12.
The results showed that in women who took folate alone, homocysteine dropped 11 per cent; in those who took folate and 6 mcg vitamin B12, it dropped 15 per cent and in the other group the drop was 18 per cent.
